How you ship your goods depends on many factors, time, volume and budget, all play a part in determining how you ship. The general rule is that for time critical shipments or small volume, lightweight goods then air freight may be the best solution. For larger volume less urgent shipments then sea freight is your best option.

Air Freight/ Cargo Shipments

Air Freight charges are calculated on the basis of the chargeable weight of the cargo. However to determine the chargeable air freight rate we need the length, width and height of each packed piece/box/crate etc which then allows us to calculate the volumetric weight. Air freight charges are based on which weight is greater, either the volumetric weight or the actual weight. The actual weight is easy, just place it on scales and weigh. The volumetric weight calculation is based on: Length (cm) x Width (cm) x Height (cm) divided by 6000 (equals the volume weight in Kg)

Example You are shipping 8 boxes with a total actual weight of 45kgs. All the boxes are the same size, 60 x 40 x 20cms. Using the above calculation, the volumetric weight is 64kgs which is higher than the actual weight of 45kgs so the chargeable weight would be 64 kgs. 8 boxes at 60 x 40 x 20cms = 384,000cm3 Divide 384,000cm3 by 6000 = 64kg volumetric weight (Please note depending on the destination the volume weight can be 5000 or 4000)

If you have several items and are unsure whether to ship by air or sea we will also give you the sea freight rate and also the date of sailing of the ship and the ETA (estimated time of arrival). Many of our shippers are surprised at the quick transit times for some destinations. Shipping to Port New York USA is a 7/8 day transit from Port to Port and is a weekly service as USA is a very high volume destination. Sea Freight – Shipping Worldwide  We ship full loads (FCL) and groupage (LCL) to destinations worldwide from USA to Africa to Asia to Europe. We also ship vehicles and plant and machinery in containers and also on the RO RO service which means roll on and roll off. So at the Port of departure it would be driven or towed on the vessel and at Port of exit would be driven off or towed off. The RO RO service is for those vehicles which are self-propelled. If they cannot be driven then they may be containerised. We can arrange for the loading, lashing and securing of vehicles and plant and machinery in containers. A shipper sending a high value vehicle or costly or sensitive plant and machinery may prefer to containerise rather than use the cheaper RORO service. The cargo might be too big for a container so may need to be shipped on a flat rack or other special equipment. Whatever your requirements there will be equipment available to do the job. How we calculate the rate – FCL The rate is determined by several factors. Does the nature of the shipment require that the container be placed on the floor or does it need to be left at the premises overnight or maybe for a few days? What size of container is required – we have 20ft, 40ft and 40ft HC – and also special equipment such as reefers for frozen, chilled food, flat racks to ship plant and machinery, open tops for goods that are out of gauge and need craning into a container – so many different types of equipment available for whatever requirement you may have Where are you shipping to and from where – need postcode for loading and if you want to door will need area code, zip code of final destination Is the cargo hazardous – a Dangerous Goods Note will require completion which we can submit Is the cargo overweight – will it need a tri axle Is it time critical – we have direct services and what we call trans shipment services where for example a container to Vancouver can go on a direct service to Montreal or Toronto and then be railed to Vancouver, transit time of approx. 24 days. A trans-shipment service could be, as an example, that the container for Vancouver is shipped via Cartagena, Colombia with a transit time of 34 days. The longer transit time is reflected in the price we charge you because the rate is less on an indirect service and we pass that saving to you the shipper. If it isn’t time critical then you might be able to make a saving.

All the above factors determine the rate charged. A shipper sending household goods in a 20ft from Rochdale to Port Melbourne, loading in 3 hours with a weight less than 18 tonnes will pay considerably less than a shipment of heavy goods in a 20ft from Rochdale to Port Melbourne, left on site for 2/3 days and needing a tri axle. Sea Freight  – LCL / Groupage If you are shipping a small volume then you would ship LCL which means your goods are shipped in a container with other small shipments being shipped to the same Port. For example you might be shipping 10 boxes from Rochdale to New York USA.  The container your goods would be shipped in would be one to Port New York and would contain goods not just for New York but for Maine, Boston and New Hampshire to name but a few possible destinations. This is called consolidation and enables us to give exceptionally good rates for groupage shipments.

 

How we calculate the rate – LCL LCL shipment rates are determined by the volume of your shipment. To calculate the volume, multiply the Length (cm) x Width (cm) x Height (cm) of each packed piece. The minimum chargeable by sea is 1cbm.

Example You are shipping 8 boxes. All the boxes are the same size, 60 x 40 x 20cms. Using the calculation above: 1 box at 60 x 40 x 20cms = 0.048cbm 8 boxes at 60 x 40 x 20cms = 0.384cbm So the volume is 0.384 cm. The minimum chargeable by sea for groupage/LCL is 1 cbm.  So in this instance we would also compare the rate by Air freight. We would advise you that you could send another .616 cbm, approx. another 12 boxes of the size above by sea without incurring any additional charge for sea freight. It may well be that you have more items to ship that can then increase the volume and make it more cost effective or you may decide that it is a better option to ship by Air. The destination, volume, collection point will all impact on the rate.

Do you require a standard collection or is a tail lift vehicle required? Do you want packing service, do you require boxes? Each shipment is different and unique to you the shipper. We have over 20 receiving depots so you may want to deliver your goods into our depot and save on collection. We have several receiving depots convenient for Rochdale shipments and you are more than welcome to deliver the goods, if you prefer, to one of our depots.
